Blog v Wiki
A blog is an online journal that
allows anybody to be the reporter or the publisher. The reporter/publisher
could write about any subject of his or her interest. Unlike traditional HTML
web pages, blog websites allow users to post their own comments. Web blogs are user-
friendly even to those that do not have much technology experience. A blog is a
great business tool for collaborating. Starbucks blog is a great example; the
blog is called My Starbucks Idea, and it collaborates between the company and
its customers by allowing them to post and share ideas. By using My Starbucks
Idea, the customers create a connection with the company and feels part of it
and the company gains useful information that can be used to their business. Another
example of a blog that was used for collaboration is a neighborhood blog called
Bay Ridge Talk. This incredible blog brought the neighbors together led to arrestment
of six suspect that were accused for drugs and weapon charges. Katherine
Khatari on of the neighbors said “People don’t like to fight alone. There’s
strength in numbers, you know? There’s more of us than them.” Thus, the blog
collaborated the neighbors to fight together by commenting to one each other.
A wiki is a web page that allows users
to quickly add, edit, remove and change information or/and reorganize the page.
As oppose to blogs that allow users to add information in the form of comments.
A wiki web page could be used as a great business tool for collaboration. A
company could use a wiki page for a document or project that several people are
working on. However, not every segment could become a wiki page. The Los
Angeles Times has created a wiki page that focus on the war in Iraq. The
editors added information with their opinions and invited users to
collaborating by editing the page. However, the users contributive in a
negative way by adding porn and profanity so the newspaper took down the wiki
page after three days. In the article “How to use Wikis for Business” they responded
with “Perhaps the Times expected too much; perhaps it misjudged the juvenile
capacity of some web users. But the real problem with the wikitorial was that
the times sent a wiki to do a blog’s job.” Blog’s are more to make
conversations and collaborating ideas and opinions where wikis are more to
collaborating information in an organized web page.
The importance of convergence in today’s
networked world is huge. From the business side, it is more efficient; saves
time and money. And for an individual, can be connected to anything that
interest him/ her at any giving moment, easy access to information.
A new wiki page that I would
suggest is a page for yoga. Because there are so many yoga studios in the city
it could be hard for one to find the perfect one for him/her. In this wiki page
users could provide information about the studio; different instructors,
classes and atmosphere.
I think you made some great points here, compare the difference between blog and wiki. They both are great website to use, and each have their own advantages.
ReplyDeleteBlogs help people put their thoughts out there. I agree that it is great for business for collaborating. For example, lets say I have a website that sells clothing. You can write a blog about the effectiveness of my website, the uniqueness of my clothing, and what I should be looking to improve on. Its basically free advertising. Another great point you made involving the wiki page. A wiki page is great for collaborating in business. Instead of personally notifying one another each others thoughts, you can make one page that is seen by everyone, like google docs, and edit and write information in the document. This is very efficient.
ReplyDeleteI agree that blogs are great for businesses. WalMart recently began a blog that allows customers to discuss products, customer service, and other matters. WalMart is super excited about their blog because it has helped better their customer service and discontinue selling products that customers do not approve or are receiving poor reviews. In regards to wikis, I believe that wikis serve a better purpose for collaborating within the organization such as individual teams (i.e. an advertising team or the accounting team) because it will better help planning and organization as well as proposing different ideas.
