Social Networking

Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one’s business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals, often through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.
One example of social networking for both corporate and individuals is LinkedIn. For corporate, LinkedIn is a great tool to meet new contacts for recruiting. Maureen Crawford-Hentz (recruits for Osram Sylvania) describes in Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting “Typing keywords into a search engine, Crawford can scrape the entire network to dig out high- quality candidates that she can’t find elsewhere.” Hence, by using LinkedIn for recruiting, a corporate will save time and money. Moreover, LinkedIn could also be a useful tool for an individual that is searching for a job. By networking through LinkedIn one could expand their business connections which could lead to be exposed to more job opportunities.
Some of the benefits of these technologies to society include; increases learning opportunities, keeps people updated on current affairs, makes communication cheaper, easier and faster, connecting people all over the world. However, there is a “dark side” to these technologies to society like; people losing in touch with each other, encouraging a sedentary lifestyle and increased risk of cyber bullying and peer pressure. In the article “Antisocial Networking?” The question of social networking as a good or bad thing for society was brought up. The articles mention both pros and cons such as; helps shy kids connecting with others but also cyber-bulling and sexting as a concern. There are two sides to everything however personally I think that these technologies are harming the society more than benefiting it.
To my opinion, these technologies will continue to innovate, the networks will become easier and faster for the user to use. Artificial intelligence is the next step, that is where the future is going to and eventually these technologies will be combined with artificial intelligence.
